Jayne has been named Nurse of the Year and donated £1,000 to The Sick Children's Trust.

Jayne Gosling, a chemotherapy nurse at Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, has been named Nurse of the Year in a competition to recognise outstanding nurses, organised by Hays Healthcare, the leading recruiting experts.

The award is the result of months of nominations and a month of public voting, during which Jayne was chosen to be the recipient of a £1,000 donation to her chosen charity, The Sick Children’s Trust, which provides free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, and emotional support, to families with sick children in hospital in the UK.

Jayne treats and cares for patients in a very busy day ward delivering chemotherapies. Inspired to become a nurse by her grandmother, Jayne has now been recognised for her amazing strength, consideration and inspirational personality.

Jayne said: “I have been overwhelmed by the comments and good wishes I have received. People I have never met have been in touch and voted for me. I know it may sound modest but I didn’t expect to win so I couldn’t believe it when I saw your colleagues with the £1,000 cheque this morning.”

“On average, 2 million children in the UK require hospital treatment each year. They often have to be transferred to specialist units far from home and life for their families is suddenly thrown into turmoil. The Sick Children’s Trust works with hospitals, supporting them in their role and providing help to families 365 days of the year.”

Simon Hudson, Director at Hays Healthcare added: “We are delighted to recognise Jayne’s outstanding commitment to patient care through this award, and to support the work of Jayne’s chosen charity, The Sick Children’s Trust. Jayne’s contribution to nursing and care for patients is amazing, and was reflected in Jayne receiving a high percentage of the votes. Jayne, and the two runners up, represent the very best qualities of the nursing profession.”

The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ located at leading paediatric hospitals across the country, two of which are based at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Sam Haley, House Operations Manager, said:

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Jayne for kindly choosing to donate £1,000 to The Sick Children’s Trust. Every year, our two Sheffield ‘Homes from Home’, Treetop and Magnolia Houses, support hundreds of families with free accommodation when their seriously ill children are admitted to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for specialist treatment. With this generous donation, we will be able to support another 30 families for one night in a ‘Home from Home’, keeping them just minutes from their child’s hospital bedside. Congratulations to Jayne and thank you to Hays Healthcare.”
